History - Purpose

The preservation and protection of the environment is an element of culture for the modern man and a prerequisite for survival.

The initiative of the establishment and operation of the Museum of Natural History in 1998, arose due to the thrive for developing a collective environmental conscience, and especially with respect to children and young people. The Natural History Museum is one of the largest in Greece, in number and completeness of stuffed exhibits, which for most come from the personal collection of the late Xenophon Yataganas.

Today in new, attractive premises, owned by the municipality, the collection of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, skulls, nests and shells from Greece and from other parts of the world, enables the visitor to get to know and to love nature, to develop environmental awareness and thus take action on voluntary efforts.

In parallel, the Museum of Natural History contributes to promoting scientific research for the natural environment, through both local and national activities.
